How long do I have to pay the Charge?

When your vehicle crosses either the Bridge or Tunnel your number plate is read & stored by an ANPR device. You then have until midnight the following day to pay the toll charge. Payments can also be made long in advance before making the crossing.

To increase the time threshold that you have to pay, you can try enrolling with a company called Dartsave. If you are registered to Dartsave you have up to 21 days after crossing to make the payment of £2.50. An e-mail reminder will also be sent to you to make the payment.

Dartford Crossing late payment fine.

If you forget to pay the Dart Charge on time, you will get a £70 fine, which reduces to £35 if paid within a 14 day period. If you fail to pay within 14 days, it goes up to £105.

This fine applies to seperate crossings made by tunnel or bridge per day, so if you make a return trip and forget to pay for both legs of the trip, you could be liable for a total fine of £210 for that one day.

If you think your penalty charge notice (PCN) is wrong, you may be able to make a Dart Charge appeal to an independent tribunal. Make sure you reply to all PCN's within 28 days.
